When One Land Became Many

Year 900, Late Summer — The history behind the restored world and the completed project that mapped its new features.

One wall of the Bethel-Tagus map room holds the completed relief chart of the restored new world. It records the earth as it now stands: divided continents, long coastlines, cold polar lands, renewed former deserts, and the completed landways. Across the room are much older historical sheets: coastlines and mountain lines drawn during the early Paradise centuries from the memories of Noah, his family, and people who knew the first generations after the Flood. Those memory sheets show the land before the Flood gathered into one great pre-Flood supercontinent.

Those early maps and the testimony behind them remain the first and strongest evidence for the geography of the pre-Flood world. Later fieldwork confirmed what the passengers had described. Matching continental shelves, rock systems, fossil beds, mountain roots, and opposing margins fit the remembered geography. This history explains how the present earth acquired its broad physical arrangement; it is context for the restored world shown on the Project chart, not the purpose of the Project itself.

The earth before the Flood

The pre-Flood world was not uniformly warm, flat, or tropical. Noah’s family described cold uplands, snow-fed rivers, high mountain ice, cool northern and southern districts, and strong seasonal differences at elevation. What differed was the arrangement of land and water. A single immense land system gave the oceans fewer long interior passages and produced far less coastline than the divided world possesses now. Water moved through the atmosphere and ground in patterns no longer experienced after the Flood.

Genesis 2:5, 6 describes an early time when rain had not yet fallen and a mist rose from the earth to water the ground. That passage describes conditions before human life spread across the world; it does not require every later pre-Flood district to have shared one identical local climate. By Noah’s day there were cold places and regional seasons. Even so, the global water system remained unlike the familiar post-Flood cycle of broad oceans, long storm tracks, polar seas, and rain-bearing continental weather.

The first memory maps were assembled patiently. Noah identified the broad relation of inhabited lands and waters. His sons added routes, uplands, river systems, and the direction of distant districts known through travel and family records. Later resurrected residents supplied regional detail. Their drawings did not agree at every bend of a river, but their large forms agreed with one another and, centuries later, with surveys of the seafloor and continental margins.

When the deep broke open

Genesis 7:11 records that the springs of the vast watery deep were broken open and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. The completed geological reconstruction shows what that breaking involved beneath the water. Long fracture fronts opened through the crust. Upwelling material forced new basin floors apart. Dense descending slabs pulled adjoining crust downward. Compression ahead of those descending margins folded and thrust rock into new mountain systems. Other districts subsided, allowing water to occupy widening basins. These forces acted together, not as a slow migration of continents across a quiet surface.

The continental plates were driven, pulled, buckled, and rotated through distances ordinarily associated with immense periods of slow motion. Rock failed along fault systems thousands of miles long. Each major rupture transferred stress to another. Seafloor rose or dropped abruptly. Submarine slopes collapsed. Water displaced by those changes crossed the developing ocean basins in immense intersecting waves. Volcanic heat, fractured crust, rain from above, and water released through the broken deep combined in one world-destroying event.

Post-entry surveyors reconstructed the sequence by matching fault margins, volcanic provinces, mountain roots, seafloor ages, displaced formations, and the remembered timing of events aboard the ark. The reconstruction does not place modern scientific terms into the Genesis text. It places measured physical evidence beside the record and the testimony of the people who lived through it.

What the ark’s passengers experienced

By Year 900, the accounts of all eight passengers have been copied, compared, taught, and quoted for centuries. Some were preserved in formal testimony; others were repeated in family instruction and later confirmed by the speakers. They are not quotations from Genesis, nor were they all given directly to this Journal. They belong to the common historical record presented here to explain the forces that shaped the world later restored and mapped.

Noah’s often-repeated description of the first great lift is brief: “The earth struck the vessel from beneath, and then the ground was gone.” The ark did not rise as a boat rises on a calm tide. Water surged around the grounded hull while the earth shook beneath it. The timbers loaded unevenly. Then a stronger rise freed the vessel, turned it, and carried it above land that was already disappearing.

Shem distinguished the sound from ordinary thunder: “Thunder ended. This did not. The grinding traveled under us until every beam carried it.” His description corresponds to repeated crustal rupture and the transmission of low-frequency vibration through water and the ark’s structure. Between the strongest shocks, the family heard impacts from floating timber, stone, and other debris. Rain on the roof remained constant enough that they learned to judge a change in the violence by the movement of the floor rather than by the noise above them.

Japheth described one crossing wave: “The lamps went toward the wall, returned, and went toward the wall again before anything in the stalls could find its feet.” The ark rolled, pitched, and yawed as waves arrived from different directions. Water and stored supplies shifted within their containers. People were thrown against braces and partitions. The family moved through the vessel with lines and handholds, working in pairs when the motion was strongest.

Nahara, one of Noah’s daughters-in-law, gave an account often used when teaching animal care: “The cattle called until the floor rose under them. Then the whole row became quiet. We spoke to them before we could stand ourselves.” The animals reacted differently. Some cried out, some strained against enclosures, and others became still. Bedding and waste had to be cleared. Water had to be carried without spilling. Ventilation openings and supplies had to remain usable amid rain, spray, heat, fear, and darkness.

Ham remembered the pauses as sharply as the blows: “When the shaking stopped, we waited for the next sound. When it came, we thanked Jehovah that the ark was still around us.” Those intervals were not safety. They were the time in which the family checked braces, stalls, water vessels, stores, and one another before the next rupture or wave arrived.

Genesis 7:16 says that Jehovah shut the door after the people and animals entered. First Peter 3:20 says that eight people were carried safely through the water. Genesis 8:1 says that Jehovah remembered Noah and every wild and domestic animal with him. The physical record makes the saving power in those verses even clearer. No wooden vessel, animals, or human bodies could have endured those combined forces through construction and seamanship alone. Jehovah preserved the ark’s structure, kept its occupants alive, and brought the vessel through a catastrophe that destroyed the inhabited world outside it.

The world inherited after the Flood

The Flood left a divided earth with long coastlines, deep oceans, new mountain systems, broader polar ice, inland seas, island chains, and a reorganized water cycle. Cold did not begin with the Flood, but some cold regions became larger or more severe. Rain did not become harmful in itself, but the post-Flood atmosphere and oceans supported forms of destructive weather unknown to the first human generations.

Many readers born late in Paradise know pre-entry weather only from records. Oceans once supplied energy to tropical cyclones that crossed coasts with destructive winds and storm surges. Other regions endured tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms, flash floods, prolonged drought, heat waves, dust storms, lightning fires, and rain intense enough to carry soil and homes away. Snow and rain were necessary parts of the water cycle, but imperfect human settlement and uncontrolled natural forces often turned weather into a source of fear.

Under Kingdom rule, destructive weather did not need to continue. Traditional rain still waters many districts. Snow still stores water in mountains and feeds rivers. Cold and warm seasons still organize planting, harvest, migration, work, and rest. The difference is that people no longer live at the mercy of storms that destroy homes, crops, and lives.

It has proved loving that restoration did not erase the earth’s post-Flood variety. The divided continents provide far more coastline, sheltered bays, straits, wetlands, islands, and ecological edges than one compact landmass supplied. Cool oceans and cold uplands support creatures and plants that do not belong in tropical districts. The Arctic remains a seasonal sea. Greenland now has extensive habitable southern and western valleys while retaining a permanent highland ice sheet. Antarctica remains predominantly ice, with limited cold margins used for settlement, research, travel support, and careful stewardship.

Places that were nearly uninhabitable late in the pre-entry world have been restored without being made identical. Former desert belts now contain grasslands, woodlands, orchards, spring-fed gardens, and wetlands. Damaged watersheds hold water again. Poisoned industrial ground has been cleaned and rebuilt as soil. Salt flats, stripped hills, and eroded farmland have become productive mosaics. Some severe interiors remain lightly settled or wild because a restored earth has room for wilderness as well as cultivation.

The completed New World Mapping Project

The New World Mapping Project was an official undertaking commissioned under Christ’s heavenly government. Its purpose was simply to map the restored new world and its new features: coasts, watersheds, polar lands, regions, settlement anchors, ocean passages, renewed former deserts, and the landways joining the continents. The work extended across generations and every major landmass. It was completed before the present Year 900 digitization began.

The Project combined field traverses, astronomical positions, depth soundings, coastline surveys, current measurements, ecological records, and construction drawings. Corrections were carried back to common master sheets. A coastline was not accepted because one crew had drawn it confidently. It was checked from land, water, and adjoining records until the sheets agreed. That patient process is why the completed maps can now serve as a shared geographic foundation.

Building the landways

The landways were built to give people, animals, freight, and emergency assistance dependable passage between continental regions while preserving the oceans as living systems. Construction followed shelf depth, currents, weather exposure, migration routes, and the location of stable foundations. The finished land was shaped as landscape, with watersheds, varied coasts, soil, vegetation, settlement areas, and wildlife passage—not as a road embankment laid across the sea.

Crews first mapped the seabed and established deep foundations. Broad stages were raised and allowed to settle through repeated seasons. Protective reefs and irregular shorelines reduced wave energy. Drainage basins and freshwater storage were formed before permanent planting. Salt-tolerant grasses and shrubs prepared exposed ground; woodland, gardens, and settled districts followed as soils matured. Roads and other Waylines were laid only after the landforms and water movement had stabilized.

Every ocean landway retains deep navigable water gates. Those channels preserve major currents, allow marine migration, and keep adjoining seas connected. The Wayline road crosses each gate by bridge, while the physical landway appears on the completed map as ordinary terrain with irregular coasts, shallow banks, valleys, and inhabited stages.

Bering became broad restored shelf country, generally 180 to 300 miles across, with cold grassland, watersheds, migration country, and settled districts. The Atlantic landway is about 35 miles across at its narrower stages and widens to approximately 75 miles around its principal garden and service districts; four deep water gates cross the chain. Sunda–Arafura ranges from about 30 to 60 miles and retains four gates between its shelf stages. The Southern Crown uses cold-climate stages approximately 20 to 50 miles across with four major gates. Gibraltar is a compact passage of about 10 miles with two navigable openings. Darién required a maintained route through existing land rather than a new ocean landform.

Construction was demanding. People lived for seasons on unfinished stages, measured settlement after heavy seas, replaced material that compacted poorly, rebuilt drainage, replanted exposed slopes, and sometimes removed work that had altered a current more than predicted. The completed landways carry that patient history in their foundations, even though a modern traveler sees established fields, forests, shore settlements, water gates, and a continuous route.

Why digitization begins in Year 900

The completed New World Mapping Project is an analog archive. Its authoritative record fills field notebooks, sounding sheets, coastline tracings, corrected master charts, route books, ecological surveys, and landway construction sections. The work itself is finished. What has just begun in Year 900 is the preparation of a faithful digital edition for the NW-Net.

With permission and assistance from the New World Mapping Project administrators, The Peaceable Earth is digitizing selected Project records alongside the Journal’s editions, Resident Notes, Living History articles, interviews, and sketches. Our role is archival and journalistic. We did not commission or complete the Mapping Project. We are presenting its finished work, linking map features to their source records, and recording provenance so that a reader can distinguish an official Project sheet, a later Project correction, and our explanatory notes.

The map page associated with this article is therefore the New World Mapping Project Archive, a new digital window into the completed undertaking. Only part of the analog collection is available there now. Additional regions, resolutions, and construction sheets will appear as digitization proceeds—not because the original Project remains unfinished, but because a nine-century physical archive cannot be transferred to the NW-Net at once.

Their names are preserved in the appropriate records. Here it is enough to acknowledge that the finished map represents generations of disciplined service.

The pre-Flood, Flood, and pre-entry history related in this article provides context for the geography now shown; those histories are not combined into the official charts. Digitization makes the Project’s record easier to study without changing whose work it is or how carefully it was completed.
